These are All of the Lenses Canon Will Announce in 2020: Report

Notoriously reliable site Nokishita has posted a list of six lenses and two teleconverters that Canon is planning to release in 2020. All of them are RF-mount lenses, some are exciting, and some of them are quite strange… like the 600mm f/11 and 800mm f/11 super-telephoto primes.

First things first, here is the full list:

  • RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
  • RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM
  • RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
  • RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM
  • RF 600mm f/11 DO IS STM
  • RF 800mm f/11 DO IS STM
  • RF 1.4x teleconverter
  • RF 2x teleconverter

This list is based on the Nokishita tweet below:

There are lots of exciting lenses on this list, most prominently the 70-200mm f/4, the 85mm f/2 Macro, and the nifty-fifty 50mm f/1.8, which could prove to be one of the most popular and affordable RF-mount lens yet. But there are also some strange ones in there, namely the 600mm and 800mm super-telephoto primes with inexplicably slow f/11 maximum apertures.

Canon Rumors has confirmed that they, too, were told about these two lenses, which will supposedly be “DO” lenses that use Diffractive Optics to decrease their overall size and weight. Maybe that’s the idea: the world’s smallest 600mm and 800mm primes—full-frame lenses that are closer to the size of telephoto primes for Micro Four Thirds.

But even that seems strange. What good is a tiny lens if it’s nigh on unusable in most lighting conditions?

Either way, this leak gives us a very informative and interesting peek at Canon’s lens roadmap for 2020, and its plans for the RF-mount. Clearly, Canon is hoping to round out the RF lineup by releasing some more affordable (if slightly slower) f/1.8 and f/4 lenses. You won’t hear any complaints from us…
